Biography

For three decades, Brenner has been creating paintings, installations and mixed media works that offer carefully crafted examinations of complex topics. Her themes have included feminine identity, migration, the rapid pace of world change, and environmental destruction. Her work has been featured at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, the Columbia Museum of Art, the North Carolina Museum of Art, the Mint Museum of Art, and the Cameron Art Museum. She has received a Pollock-Krasner grant, a Southern Arts Federation/NEA Regional Fellowship Award in Painting and Works on Paper, two North Carolina Artist’s Fellowships, and a Regional Artist Project Grant from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Arts & Science Council. 

Brenner spent her childhood in New York City and the suburbs of Boston, her 20s and 30s in California, and is now a resident of Charlotte, NC. She was part of Judy Chicago’s collaborative team, creating embroidery for The Dinner Party. She received her M.F.A. from the University of Southern California and is Associate Professor Emeritus in the Department of Art and Art History at UNC Charlotte.
